Position Summary: The Senior Accountant is responsible for the accurate and timely recording, reporting, and analysis of financial transactions for the organization’s diverse programs. This role plays a critical part in ensuring compliance with government funding regulations, supporting audits, and contributing to strategic financial planning. The ideal candidate has deep experience in nonprofit accounting, particularly with grant management and fund accounting.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Reporting & General Ledger:
- Maintain the general ledger and ensure all transactions are recorded in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit standards.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for internal and external stakeholders.
- Reconcile bank and investment accounts and ensure the integrity of all financial data.
Grant & Fund Accounting:
- Track and report on restricted and unrestricted funding, ensuring compliance with federal (e.g., OMB Uniform Guidance), state, and local grant requirements.
- Monitor expenditures by grant to ensure appropriate cost allocation and spending within allowable limits.
- Assist program managers with budget tracking and financial performance of their grants.
Budgeting & Forecasting:
- Support the annual budgeting process and periodic forecasts in collaboration with the Chief Financial Officer
- Analyze budget vs. actual variances and provide insights and recommendations.
Audit & Compliance:
- Prepare schedules and documentation for annual financial and single audits.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant financial regulations and grant requirements.
- Assist in updating financial policies and procedures as needed.
Internal Controls & Process Improvement:
- Maintain and improve internal controls, processes and accounting systems to enhance operational efficiency and mitigate risk.
- Contribute to systems improvements, as needed.
Collaboration & Support:
- Serve as a financial liaison to program staff.
- Assist with other projects and duties as assigned by the CFO.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
- 5+ years of accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a nonprofit setting.
- Proven experience with fund accounting and managing government grants (federal, state, and local).
- Strong knowledge of OMB Uniform Guidance and other applicable grant regulations.
- Strong MS Office skills and keen attention to detail.
- Experience with fund accounting software.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- CPA
- Experience with Blackbaud’s Financial Edge.

Additional Information:
- KSTC has it’s primary location in Lexington, Kentucky. This role requires regular presence in that office, typically three days per week.
